Mastering the Art of Delegation

business management

As a business manager, handing tasks over to others is an essential part of management that will allow you to spend more time on more significant areas of business. This also ensures someone with more specialised skills can cover the project, and provides a sense of empowerment to employees.

Marino Sussich is an expert in business success and is well aware of the necessity of delegation for healthy business operation. Learn more about its importance and the 7 tips to become a master at delegation.

Why delegation is an important skill

While it can sometimes be tempting to take on everything yourself and try to complete tasks the way that you know you would like them done, it is simply not possible for one person to complete all that it takes to run a business on their own. A lot of time, someone else might even be able to complete the task at hand better than you.

On top of lessening the load for yourself, sharing tasks and responsibilities with other team members is a great way to empower your employees, as well as grow their skills and productivity. Delegation involves an important level of trust in others in your team that allows them to feel capable, proficient and useful.

7 tips to become a master at delegation

1. Identify the tasks that can be delegated

The first step is to identify what in your pool of responsibilities can be shared with others, and what should be completed by yourself. The tasks to be given to others should be able to be effectively performed by those other than yourself without a loss of quality or efficiency.

You should consider the strengths, skills or interests of those in your team and offer tasks to those who you believe would be capable of completing them to a high standard, with your mentoring if necessary. This offers opportunities for development and maximises the potential of your team

2. Select the right people

To offer a task to the most appropriate person, you should first conduct an assessment of the skills of each individual. You should also determine whether they have the time outside of their usual workload to adopt an additional project.

3. Be clear

When assigning tasks to others, it is extremely important to communicate effectively about the details of the task, expectations, any relevant information, due dates and context. Any resources that are necessary to facilitate understanding should be provided, and an open dialogue to ensure those assigned feel they are able to ask questions at any time.

4. Share authority & responsibility

As an element of empowerment, those assigned should be encouraged to exercise their own judgement, truly take ownership and believe they are able to make decisions of their own throughout the process without consistently checking in with you. While they should ask you if they are feeling lost, they should also be able to trust their own expertise and feel that this is trusted by you.

5. Provide support

If there are any tools or information that will benefit your team and enable them to effectively complete the delegated tasks, these should be provided. You should offer guidance when necessary, and address any challenges that may arise.

6. Maintain communication & feedback

It is useful to maintain communication and identify checkpoints during task progress where you can provide feedback and ensure they are on the right track. This will save time if things are not being done correctly, as the whole project will not need to be redone.

7. Celebrate & appreciate team members

Last but not least, it is important to display appreciation for the work of your team and their assistance with the delegated projects. You should celebrate their achievements once tasks are complete, and show that their hard work has not gone unnoticed.

This will help to boost morale, as well as reinforce a positive work environment where team members feel empowered and valued.
